Welcome to the Kawempe Mile Race
an annual event that combines passion for running with a mission to inspire change. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a first-time participant, or a supporter of our causes, here’s everything you need to know to join us in this life-changing journey.
The Ugandan Crew
The Burgess parkrun Ugandan crew started with Alex Akom jogging to catch a bus and realizing he needed to improve his fitness. He invited his friend, George Watokee, to join him, and their running group grew as they encouraged more of their Ugandan friends to participate, inspired by the sense of community and support it provided.
He found running alone unmotivating, so he invited his friend George Watokee to join him.
As their running group grew, they started encouraging other friends from their community to join them for park runs in Burgess Park.
The group was motivated by the sense of camaraderie, social connection, and support they found in each other, which helped them integrate into their new life in the UK.
The group became a tight-knit community, even organizing events like their annual Ugandan Independence Day celebration at the park, and is now a well-integrated part of the Burgess parkrun family.
